Easy To Learn Guitar Tabs For Peter Gunn

It is easy to learn guitar tabs. Only one basic idea needs to be understood, the rest falls into place. To illustrate this idea I will be using tabs for a simple piece of music called Peter Gunn. Guitar tabs are seen by learning guitar players as an easy way to start playing guitar right away. That is true but it is wrong to think that guitar tablature just needs to be read. Like all languages it needs to be understood. So if you have an idea that you would like to become a guitar player and tabs would be a great way to sidestep any difficult learning, there are a couple of things you need to get straight.

For somebody who just wants to play along with the singing around a campfire, it must look like a fairly easy job to play the guitar. Lots of people can do it and many of them are idiots. But when you look at a piece of guitar tab it looks kind of scary. Well, look again. It is just a picture of a guitar. Visualize it in your imagination. The tuning end of the guitar is to your left, the body of the guitar is to your right. The thinnest string is on the top, the thickest string is on the bottom. Nothing scary about that.

Moving on, we see numbers on the guitar tab. What are they? The numbers running down the left side are the notes sounded when you play the open strings, the numbers that run along the strings represent frets. Frets are the metal strips on the neck of the guitar. You put your fingers a fraction behind the frets to alter the length of the string, so that when it is plucked, strummed or picked the sound is higher or lower depending on how far up the fingerboard you are. So the number one, for example, indicates that one of your fingers must be placed behind the first fret of the guitar. This is the fret closest to the tuning gear on the end of the neck.

Now let us look at a section of guitar tab. This is a short riff from a piece of music called Peter Gunn. It was written by Henry Mancini who probably wrote most of the orchestral music that most of us have ever heard, and it has been recorded by many artists, notably The Blues Brothers, Jimi Hendrix and Emerson, Lake And Palmer. The first recording of it was a hit for electric guitar pioneer, Duane Eddy.

All the notes are played on the sixth string - the thickest string, remember? If you play the piano, try it out, the notes are E E F# E
1000
G E A G# played as one bar in 4/4 time.

e——————————

B——————————

G——————————

D——————————

A——————————

E–0–0–2–0–3–0–5–4–

To play the tabs use down strokes with the pick or your thumb. Once you have played the notes once, go back to the start and play them again until you are tired. Congratulations, now you know first hand that it is easy to learn guitar tabs. Really you have all you need to go on and learn your favorite songs. Not many songs have not been put into tab form, so it is just a matter or searching on the net. As your technique gets better, you will find that there are symbols that represent any left hand guitar technique you will learn. If you find tabs for a song that you like, and it contains symbols you do not understand, the tab often has an explanatory key at the top or the bottom. Or you can just look on the popular tab sites for explanations of any symbols you do not know.

Play The Piano And Stay Young In Body And Spirit

Face it! We are all getting older day by day. We are ageing. There are all sorts of theories and ideas to combat ageing and they all espouse nearly the same thing - a person must remain active in mind and body. Ideas to keep the mind active include learning a language, doing crossword puzzles, or learning to play an instrument.

Each of these activities engages the brain, but learning the piano actually goes beyond the first two activities. In fact, learning to play the piano includes learning a new language, the language of note reading, and also involves the deductive and reasoning skills of solving crossword puzzles. Beyond that, playing the piano also involves physical eye-hand coordination and the technical and physical movement of hands and feet. If research is correct, learning to play the piano should be the best way to combat ageing available.

Learning a language, using deductive and reasoning skills, increasing eye-hand coordination and refining fine motor skills at the same time is not a simple task at any age and can be daunting for the average adult. However, tackling the aspects of learning to play the piano in small bites can make this anti-ageing formula not merely a must-do task but something incredibly enjoyable and satisfying.

The pentatonic or five-note approach to learning to play the piano creates almost instant success and enjoyment. The learner who approaches the piano with absolutely no previous skills or knowledge of music reading or without having ever touched a piano can successfully play songs in a day. The technical aspect of playing the piano is introduced first using melodies created with only five keys. Beginners learn to move their fingers in patterns to create songs they know and songs others know not merely exercises.

While creating these songs the mind is engaged and starts to recognize the relationship between finger placement on the keys and sounds created, between how long a finger is held down or how quickly a key is released and rhythmic structure, and between the relationship between a pattern of notes in the right hand versus those in the left hand and melody and harmony. Once the mind is prepared in this way, the actual presentatio
n and acquisition by the learner of these concepts is remarkably easy.

As the beginning pianist continues to learn additional melodies, their technical prowess improves, their reasoning and understanding of musical concepts becomes second nature and the introduction of the language of music, actual note reading, is accepted readily.

Step-by-step or small-bite-by-small-bite an adult can acquire the skills necessary to play the piano. Bypassing frustrating technical exercises and loads of conceptual information and note reading presented all at once, the pentatonic method aids the learner by reducing information to understandable, easy to grasp segments based on well-known melodies.

If I have to choose between buying an acoustic piano or a digital piano what is the best choice? let’s take a look at the different choices if you want to learn to play piano.

Personally I haven’t been forced to make the decision between buying a normal upright piano and a digital piano as I have both in my home. I can see advantages in both types of pianos when practicing the art of learning to play piano.

A normal upright piano produces sounds with hammers that strikes the strings. A digital piano on the other hand tries to duplicate the feeling of playing an acoustic piano.

Most people are familiar with the normal upright piano but what advantages has a digital piano?

First let us describe a digital piano.

A digital piano consists of a keyboard with weighted key action, sensors that detect the velocity when you play the keys and a set of sounds you can choose from. To make it possible to listen to the piano when you play you have an amplifier and loudspeakers and headphone jacks.

Here are some advantages with a digital piano:

1. A digital piano doesn’t need to be tuned. A normal acoustic piano you should tune once or twice a year. If you can’t tune a piano yourself you have to turn to a piano tuner. It can be quite expensive of course. Even a piano tuner has to pay his bills.

2. You can practice silently. A digital piano usually has a headphone jack so by using headphones you can practise as much as you want without disturbing neighbours or family members.

3. Midi interface. A digital piano usually has a midi interface which makes it possible to connect your piano to a computer and use music software like notation programs or a sequenser program or a software synthesizer.

What then are the disadvantages of having a digital piano?

1. The sounds in an acoustic piano are produced by strings vibrating and the different pitches interact in ways that you cannot copy on a digital piano. The sound quality of the sounds produced by digital pianos are becoming better and better but it is still a completely different way of producing sounds.

2. A digital piano is limited when it comes to producing different tone colors by different ways of playing. An accomplished pianist might feel limited by the sampled sounds.

There are many more things to say about choosing a piano but this is a beginning.

As you can see it is not so easy to decide what’s best for you. If you can’t decide what type of piano to buy you can do as I have done. Have both types of pianos and keep smiling.

A Child’s Self Esteem Is Positively Influenced Through Music Education

I always knew my son was cool but he wasn’t cool in school. In elementary school they called him Einstein; not in a respectful way but in a hurtful way. He didn’t want to be Einstein. He wanted to be the “cool” kid. So he started becoming the class clown to try to get the kind of attention he wanted from the other kids. This took the target off his back but still didn’t make him cool. His grades were declining and he wasn’t making tons of friends. The WORST of both worlds.

My heart broke for him. I signed him up for sports lessons to try to make friends. T-ball, basketball, soccer, Tae Kwon Do. But he wasn’t an athlete so he got teased here too.

He liked music so he took piano lessons. He added clarinet lessons in 4th grade and saxophone lessons in 5th grade through the school’s music program. One day a bigger boy took his saxophone case away from my son and hit him with it while calling him names. He kept playing the piano at home but quit the music lessons in school.

At 14 years old he discovered the electric guitar. This was the turning point for him. I never would have thought an electric guitar could influence a life so profoundly.

First of all, unlike the piano, the electric guitar was a “cool” instrument. When he learned to play a song he liked, he was proud of himself. When kids at school saw him play at the local teen center, they were impressed and thought he was ‘cool.” By the time he was 16 he was playing live rock concerts in real rock venues – and the invites to all the parties started coming his way. Even the big jocks at his school were inviting him to hang out with them.

How did a $100 electric guitar turn his self esteem around? It really wasn’t a matter of the guitar itself but the way he learned to play. Rather than taking private lessons in our home or a music store he went to the School of Rock Music after school music program that had a three-point curriculum which included individual lessons, group rehearsals and live performances. His individual teacher definitely encouraged him but it was the group rehearsals and live performances that really influenced his self esteem.

Each child needs to feel special for something they do. Our society does a great job of making athle
1000
tes feel special but we fall short for most other kids. Some schools do a great job with their band program, but not every musician wants to play in a marching band. Several kids dream of being rock stars and those kids want to rock, not march.

Everyone, children included, need to be part of a community in which they know what their individual contributions are. Some kids find this through their school or church. My son found it through the School of Rock. What community is your child contributing to?

When was the last time a teacher, uncle, or another adult who is important in your child’s life showed your child that he was important to them? Do adults express their appreciation for your child’s contributions? This made a huge difference to my son. His music teacher and music director at School of Rock made a point to tell him, and the other kids, how much they appreciated that he had practiced in preparation for a rehearsal. This positive reinforcement made my son want to practice more.

Since my son had been bullied and teased as a kid, he was sensitive to negative comments. He wouldn’t go to an adult to tell them of teasing or bullying but when adults pay attention to what the kids around them are doing and saying – and step in to establish what is acceptable - it’s amazing how quickly kids will adjust their behavior.

If your child isn’t an athlete and is still looking for a place to belong. Check out the music programs in your community. Maybe it’s a School of Rock for your child. Maybe it’s a Jazz Music program or Hip Hop or one of many genres. Don’t just rely on your school band. There are many, many more musical options to help your child find a community they feel a part of.

There are good songs. There are bad songs. Then, there are ear worms, songs that get stuck in your head and stay there: no amount of amnesia will remove them. These kinds of songs aren’t necessarily bad, but they aren’t something you want sharing your brain space for 24 hours a day. Yet, there they remain, fermented in the crevices of your mind like the frosting of a sticky bun.

With some sticking more than others, the following is our list of top five worst songs to have stuck in your head, ear worms that no amount of digging with a Q-tip will remove.

I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles): By far the best well known song from The Proclaimers, “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” is a song with a lot of miles under its belt, miles spent in your memory. Released in 1988, this song is one you don’t need to know the words to, all you need to know is that you would, in fact, walk 500 miles. You should also know that the second set of “Da-da-da’s” sounds just like Michael J. Fox. Listen, I swear it’s him.

Cupid’s Chokehold: More commonly known as “Take a Look at My Girlfriend,” “Cupid’s Chokehold” was originally release by Gym Glass Heroes in 2004 and re-released in 2006. True to its title, this song has the ability to pierce our brains with the sharpness of Cupid’s arrow. Still, we can’t really put too much blame on the song itself, the invasive “Ba da da da” line is originally from the Supertramp song, “Breakfast in America.” Supertramp is where our fingers should really be pointed.

Copacabana: This 1978 hit introduced us to Lola (she was a showgirl), Rico (he wore a diamond), and Tony (he always tended bar). A staple of disco parties everywhere, Barry Manilow knew how to put a Copacabana in our Cabeza. This song, close to thirty years old, isn’t on too frequently, but when it is, look out: its music and passion is always the fashion. Though not a bad song in itself, having “Copacabana” stuck in your head is enough to make you want to patronize someplace else.

The Rhythm is Gonna Get You: Gloria Estefan, the Miami Sound Machine, and their songs just won’t go away. Released in 1987, “The Rhythm is Gonna Get You” was a huge hit for all involved. Reaching number 5 on the pop charts, this song - with huge dance beats and unique tempos -is, unfortunately, unforgettable. Having it inside your head for hours is enough to make anyone wish the rhythm would in fact get them, and just get it over with.

Chili’s Baby Back Ribs Song: Okay, so this isn’t really a song - and the “I want my baby back baby back baby back” doesn’t exactly qualify as musical genius - but this Chili’s theme song is the epitome of an ear worm, a grilled to order ear worm. Hearing this jingle is enough to ruin your day: there’s a song about ribs in your headŅ.. and now you’re hungry.

Intervals are the fundamental building blocks of music allowing us to read and write music, and most importantly, to help us construct chords and harmonies. However words like major, minor, augmented, diminished, enharmonic and compound leave many people a bit confused, hopefully this article will throw some light on the subject.

The ‘distance’ between two notes is known as an interval. This is the difference in pitch between two notes. The size or amount of distance is measured numerically.

If we consider the C scale there are 8 notes; C D E F G A B C numbered from 1 through to 8. As an example the interval from C to G is a 5th as G is 5 notes above C. The interval from C to F is a 4th as F is 4 notes above C.

All intervals are measured from the first note of the scale. These intervals are given a name as well as a numeric value and in order of progression they are: C-D is a major 2nd, C-E is a major 3rd, C-F is a perfect 4th, C-G is a perfect 5th, C-A major 6th, C-B major 7 and finally C-C is a perfect octave.

The intervals that are perfect are so called because they have a certain purity about them that comes from the overtones and upper-partials that are contained within them (these will be explained in another article)

Intervals can be raised or lowered by a half-step/semitone. If a major interval is chromatically reduced by a half-step it becomes a minor interval e.g. C-E is a major 3rd, if it is lowered by a half-step (from C-Eb) the interval becomes a minor 3rd.

If a perfect interval is chromatically reduced by a half-step it becomes a diminished interval i.e. a perfect 4th lowered by a half-step becomes a diminished 4th.

If major or perfect intervals are raised by a half-step then they become an augmented interval i.e. a perfect 5th would become an augmented 5th.

Compound intervals are those that extend into the 2nd octave. C to D (in the next octave) is called either a major 9th or a compound major 2nd. C to F (next octave) is a perfect 11th or a compound perfect 4th.

Enharmonic intervals are those that differ in name but not pitch, for example C-G# is an augmented 5th and C-Ab is a minor 6th.

When intervals are inverted they reverse the relative position of the notes. C-G (perfect 5th) becomes G-C which is a perfect 4th, a 3rd would become a 6th. Perfect intervals when inverted remain perfect e.g. C-G being a perfect 5th would become a perfect 4th when inverted, a major becomes minor, minor becomes major, diminished becomes augmented and augmented becomes diminished.

These rules apply to all scales.

How To Learn The Acoustic Guitar

Being a guitar player is not as easy as it looks. You watch experts strumming the guitar as though it was nothing . They make it appear very easy to play smooth music, but behind the perfect songs they play are long hours of practice . They practice the guitar regularly and they undergo training just to be able to play the way they do now. Some of them even went through guitar courses , while some have been professionals for a while. In short, learning acoustic guitar is a difficult task if you are going to start at the beginning. In other words, before you go buying manuals and DIY guitar guides, ensure that you are passionate about it.

To start , you should learn about the types of acoustic guitars that beginners can start with. Depending on the purpose, you’ll encounter two kinds of guitars . The first one is the nylon string guitar. This guitar is the one usually used in classical, Latin, and some types of pop and folk music. The other kind is the steel stringed guitar, which is better for playing rock, pop, folk and many varieties of country music. If you’re just learning acoustic guitar for the first time, you do not immediately need to buy one . Nevertheless , it is best to have one especially if you are going to be self-taught . This would allow to easily comprehend string diagrams.

Now let’s discuss the best method of learning acoustic guitar for you . Learning guitar through the help of your friends is a good way to do it . But , if no one you know knows how to play the guitar or if they have no time to tutor you, you can try to attend guitar lessons . The caveat of such classes is that you must be present in every meeting . If you can’t make it to a session , it’s likely that you will miss out on some important lessons. The other option, which many actually prefer, is by turning to manuals and guitar books that you can buy in your local bookstore. Another great option that you can do indoors is by searching foronline guitar lessons.

Learning acoustic guitar through the Internet has many advantages . You can study at your own pace, which is good because some of the lessons are difficult to understand . Most people are more at ease to learn from the comfort of your own home. Plus , in case you have to do something or go somewhere , you can simply stop your lesson and resume it after you are r
eady. Lastly, studying from home doesn’t cost anything. You can now find so many guides on the Internet that can give you the basic lessons in playing guitar. You just need to utilize a search engine . After choosing the website or manual that you will use, you can begin right away. This eliminates all the hassle of going to stores or guitar classes. The only thing left to do is ensure that your interest is unwavering when it comes to learning acoustic guitar. And in no time, you will become comfortable with playing.

Lost in Translation ‘ 2 Stars (Average)

“Lost in Translation” was written and directed by Sofia Coppola and won enough awards to fill a grocery cart.

The independent film earned Sofia Coppola an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and also had 2003 Oscar nominations for Best Picture (won by “The Lord of the Rings, the Return of the King”, bad timing for Sofia), Best Director (won by Peter Jackson for Lord of the Rings) and Bill Murray as Best Actor (won by Sean Penn in “Mystic River”).

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” lost the same nomination as Murray. I would have voted for Johnny Depp as Best Actor rather than Sean Penn.

Sofia Coppola’s creation also won Golden Globe awards for Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Actor (Bill Murray), and earned nominations for Best Director and Best Actress (Scarlett Johansson).

The Oscar win was among 70 wins and 58 more nominations. To say Sofia Coppola’s creation was lauded by the critics would be a huge understatement.

Seeing this film, I would not have guessed it would have won so many awards.

Sofia Coppola wrote the lead role specifically for Bill Murray, and later said that if Murray turned it down, she would have scrapped the project.

She was nothing if not persistent in recruiting Murray for the role. In 1999, Murray apparently replaced his talent agency with a voice mailbox and an 800 number he gives out sparingly.

Coppola reportedly left hundreds of messages before Murray finally called back to discuss her offer to cast him as the star. Coppola apparently knows something about selecting actors who win awards.

Lost in Translation follows Bob Harris (Bill Murray), a fading American film actor with a humdrum marriage, who is in Tokyo to do a Japanese whiskey commercial. He meets Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), a recently college graduate in philosophy and the bored wife of a photographer doing a shoot in Tokyo.

They develop an unlikely friendship when the language barrier, Japanese culture and their own discontent surfaces. When it is time for them to resume their normal lives, leaving becomes difficult.

I give Sofia Coppola a lot of credit for not writing into the script a sexual relationship between the two. In Hollywood this would be like taking the financier’s money and not worshipping at his or her feet.

Coppola had it her way because this independent film cost only $4 million to make, was filmed in 27 days and grossed $44.5 million at last count.

The opening of the film has a lingering shot of Scarlett Johansson (as Charlotte) lying in bed sideways in her panties. Johansson was apparently reluctant to film the shot until Sofia Coppola modeled the panties herself.

Thankfully, this opening was not a precursor to the film, which sought to explore a more important issue: the meaning of life. As two unhappy individuals in their roles, both Murray and Johansson struggle to find real meaning in their current circumstances.

What happens in their exploration is really nothing special. As a viewer I was waiting to see where their relationship was going because they came to no conclusions together, or on their own.

Therein is why I gave this film an average rating rather than a good or excellent rating. I wanted real substance in this film that I could relate to in my everyday life, and I was left wanting.

How odd is it that Bob and Charlotte never introduce themselves to each other despite spending days together contemplating their mutual miserable situations? This makes no sense to me whatsoever, and does not ring true in real life.

Despite winning an Oscar for her original screenplay, Sofia Coppola does not give the substance I expect. Hollywood pours out awards for her effort, and to me it only reflects why Hollywood is called Tinseltown, all show, confusion and stress without real substance.

Ultimately, both characters are seeking meaning in their lives.

One viewer wrote this about the film, “Overall the film is just perfect. The acting, the direction, the soundtrack, plot, themes, humor, visuals . . . what’s not to like?”

What’s not to like is this: People who seek true love seldom find it. People who seek the perfect mate never find the perfect mate. People who seek to find the true meaning of life seldom find it.

The reason is simple: you do not bring meaning to your life by seeking meaning in your life, you bring meaning to your life by giving meaning to your life. Life does not come to you, you come to life, or you become an unhappy, dissatisfied person.

When we blame others we give up our ability to change.

Lost in Translation has some great scenes of Tokyo, but like pictures in a photo album, they only reflect the meaning you bring to them.

It’s official. We’re in a recession. And there’s no telling when it will end. But you don’t have to worry. Well, at least not too much.

That’s because there are many therapeutic ways to relieve stress. One of the best of these is by diverting your attention to something you enjoy. This is an excellent strategy and one that will take your mind off our failing economy.

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to play the piano. Now is the perfect time to begin. You don’t have to spend a lot here either. Especially if you learn this amazing instrument online.

That’s right. Most of us have been taught that you need to have a piano teacher by your side while you learn. But many adults just don’t have this requirement. They find it much easier to have the lesson materials handy as they dive into their learning.

And one of the best things about learning how to play piano in the New Age style is the stress reducing factor. As you sit down and play, your heart rate slows down. Breathing also slows and the mind focuses on music making.

The New Age piano style is perfect for calming and centering oneself after a hard days work or anytime one feels the need to get creative or feel more at ease.

Another therapeutic aspect of playing New Age piano is the accomplishment aspect. Many students are amazed that they can play piano quickly and with ease. Some of these students may have taken classical lessons and may also have spent years learning how to play the classical repertoire.

Not only is this not necessary, it’s quite expensive. But learning online … that’s a different story altogether. Many online teachers charge reasonable fees for their lessons and this can include video and audio along with text instruction.

All in all, if you want to feel better during these upsetting times, best to take your mind off the economy and put it where it feels best.

“I’m losing the left-hand,” cried one piano student. “Every time I try to add in my right hand, the left stops” exclaims another.

These are common complaints for students who wish to learn hand independence. And for most, this is a big problem. They want to play the piano with both hands playing different parts. But the main reason most piano students have problems with this is because they try to play too fast!

Hand independence is one area that takes some time (not too much time) but some time to achieve. And this too depends on how complicated the hands tasks are.

START OUT GOING SLOW!

For example, in the lesson “Winter Scene” we have a left hand ostinato pattern going while the right hand improvises a melody. This lesson uses just 2 chords in closed position. By giving you only 2 chords, I conveniently limit the left hand’s ability to go all over the place.

You start out by going slow and easy until the left hand is so automatic that you can play the pattern while talking to someone. In fact, you should be able to keep the left hand going while doing anything else. That’s how automatic it can become with a little practice. Then you add in the right hand to improvise a melody.

But here is where most students mess up. Why? Because they try to play something too complicated or sophisticated in the right hand. Here’s the answer - go as slow as you need too to maintain the left hand! There’s no need to rush. If all you can play is one note, then play that note. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t play around with the possibilities and experiment with your right hand. It is to say that if you’re a speed demon here, you’re defeating your own purpose.

When a simple ostinato pattern becomes second nature, you can get more sophisticated in the left hand. For instance, in lesson 60 “Sea Caves,” we use over an octave in the left hand while the right plays sixth notes and single note runs.

Hand independence is something you can achieve - but you must have patience. Slow and steady wins the race here
